Lead Technical Artist Please note that this is not a Technical Animator position, although experience in a range of crafts is very welcome!

About You:
You’re a world-class practitioner with great leadership skills, experienced in managing people as well as tech art production. You have experience across a range of art crafts and game genres - including multiplayer games. You’re likely to be T-shaped - an expert in one area, but experienced across many. You act as a conduit between art and engineering teams with a deep understanding of the challenges of making art for games.
You’re an expert in setting up artists for success with workspaces and tools, ensuring they can reach quality targets and deadlines through training and continued support.

Job Description:
As Principal/Lead Technical Artist you’ll be responsible for technical art across the studio. You’ll assess, propose and and create workspaces, workflows, pipelines and tools, set quality and delivery targets for your team, and use your great leadership skills to ensure they succeed. You’ll report to the Head of Art.

You’ll work with art, engineers and production in defining tasks and producing schedules for your team, helping to prioritise and organise their work. Identifying risks early, including where the team needs to skill-up, or recruit.
You’ll keep open channels across the studio - responding quickly to change and flagging issues/risks/praise. You’ll act as the final touch quality control for tech art, iterating on tool/pipeline designs and conducting group critiques to improve overall art quality. ​You ensure all workflows and pipelines are designed to scale for Multiplayer and Games as a Service needs. You’ll work closely with Art Direction and Visual Development to help define styles and understand how they translate to game assets. You’ll use your deep understanding of game design and technical specifications to guide/create best practices, technical benchmarks for internal and outsource teams. You’ll keep all departments, including marketing, informed of the team’s work.

Skills and Knowledge:
● T-Shaped: deeply knowledgeable in a specific field and a good broad knowledge across general art production for games.
● A wide range of tools and scripting knowledge in support of your specialism and general game art development, for various platforms and engines- you’re adaptable and versatile.
● Adept at identifying and owning Technical Art tasks and working with Engineering Teams to develop new technology, improve workflows, and resolve technical issues as required.
● Excellent collaboration skills working with Art Direction and Visual Development teams to research and develop tools and rendering capabilities that support Visual Direction.
● Understanding of physically based rendering principles.
● Strong understanding of Photoshop and either Maya or 3ds Max.

● Experience with Procedural Generation: e.g. Houdini, Substance Designer / Painter.
● Experience managing people.
● Experience identifying, defining, owning/delegating and delivering technical art pipelines and tools.
● Python or other scripting languages
● Experience with Unreal and Unity.
● Previous experience on a AAA game development team
